Riding the Wind

Price: $16.00

The most popular original musical production at Big Top Chautauqua is Riding the Wind, a multimedia creation of the Nelson-Ferris concert Company telling in song, story, and old photographs, the history and spirit of the south shore Lake Superior port of Bayfield, Red Cliff, and old LaPointe.  This is "the show that bought the tent" and includes such favorites as, "Keeper of the Light," "Brand New Town," and "Riding the Wind" as performed by the Blue Canvas Orchestra and Singers.  The readings and music on this CD are selections from two performances of Riding the Wind recorded live at Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua, three miles south of Bayfield, Wisconsin, on Mount Ashwabay.  Riding the Wind, a 2.5 hour historical musical celebration of Bayfield and the Apostle Islands environs, was conceived in 1984 when the Bayfield Heritage Association and the Apostle Islands Foundation for the Arts commissioned Warren Nelson and Betty Ferris to create a "Big Show" for their 1985 community jamboree.  Riding the Wind went on to become the first show performed on the Big Top Chautauqua stage and is its flagship show, capturing the essence of the Bayfield area's natural beauty and the heritage of its courageous pioneers.
